Clinical Pilates is a modified version of classical or traditional Pilates, aimed towards those with injuries, post-surgery or living with pain. It is slower paced than traditional Pilates so that everyone can keep up while being able to focus on doing the exercise correctly. Clinical Pilates uses the expert knowledge and experience of a Certified Pilates Instructor with a background of Physiotherapy & Pain Management to amend traditional Pilates exercises and make them more suitable for those with injuries or conditions.

International best-practice clinical guidelines recommend exercise as the basis of back pain management (read more). Clinical Pilates specifically targets muscles around your back and trunk to help strengthen and lengthen them. Fear of movement & disuse of these muscles when you have or have had back pain can increase disability. The classes are slow paced so that you can build up your exercise levels gradually.

The Exercise Rehab Classes are Clinical Pilates-based exercise classes specific to certain areas of the body. They are a progressive series of classes, starting at the most basic level and progressing as the classes go on. Each class works on improving joint mobility, soft tissue flexibility and strength alongside balance and weight-bearing ability in the classes targeting the lower limb (e.g. hip/knee/ankle). The Exercise Rehab Classes are suitable for those living with a long-term physical condition (e.g. osteoarthritis) or who may have a previous injury or surgery to the area.

Jenny is a Certified Pilates instructor with a background in Physiotherapy & Pain Management, who uses her clinical experience treating those with injuries, long term conditions and pain to design her classes. Jenny has had comprehensive Pilates training with a number of different schools which allows her to pick the best elements from these to apply to her classes. She believes that Pilates is so much more than “core strengthening” and should include a mixture of exercises promoting lengthening, strengthening, balance and joint mobility.

The most commonly reported issues with more traditional Pilates classes are the pace of the class being too fast and the progression of exercises occurring too quickly for those with injuries/pain. Clinical Pilates is a specific form of Pilates tailored towards those with injuries and living with pain. It is slow-paced so that you can keep up with the exercises and ensure you are doing them correctly.
